Exit polls predict Yogi-led BJP return in UP, give Punjab to AAP

Exit polls after the final phase of voting on Monday predicted the return of the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh state and a comfortable victory for the AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) in Punjab state. The polls forecast a dead-heat race in BJP ruled Uttarakhand and Goa. Exit polls also predicted a clean sweep for the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) in Manipur state.

In Uttar Pradesh, most pollsters forecast that the BJP party may suffer losses but still cross the 200 mark and retain power. As per the poll prediction, the Congress party would remain in the single digits. All polls predicted that the BSP could fare worse, which had won 19 seats in 2017.

In Punjab state, most pollsters gave the AAP numbers much more of the ruling Congress and the Akali Dal-BSP alliance. As per the exit poll predictions, the AAP manages to win Punjab and will trigger a churning in Indian politics.

The AAP surge in Punjab is a major setback for the Congress which had played the Dalit card by appointing Charanjit Singh Channi as CM and projecting him as the Chief Ministerial face.

In the 2017 Assembly polls, Congress stormed to power in Punjab by winning 77 seats out of 117. The AAP made its debut with this election and came second with 20 seats while the BJP-Akali Dal alliance could manage to win only 18 seats (BJP 3 and Akali Dal 15).

Exit polls do not always predict correctly. The final results of five poll-bound states will be revealed only on 10th March.
